In today’s internet, only the world’s largest tech companies have the capacity to develop and maintain a browser engine. Blink is not such a bad engine overall, and Presto was becoming hugely outdated without the necessary resources to maintain it. Whether anything shady is happening in secret I don’t know, but I would hope that the non-Chinese devs would sound the alarm if it did.Īs for “Google’s rendering engine” – well duh, that’s old news. I don’t know why the Chinese bought Opera (though conspiracy theories abound), but as far as I can tell their entire dev team is based in Norway and Poland, and the company is still registered in Norway and subject to Norwegian laws. Very much aware of their Chinese ownership, though the company is not ‘dead and gone’ but simply a subsidiary of that opaque Chinese consortium.
